Bush Buddy Backs Trump
So far, dishonorable Jeb! and the rest of the Bush family have been playing the sore losers and have failed to endorse, or even indicate that they will be voting for, the Republican Party candidate for the presidency, Donald Trump.
However, John H. Sununu, former governor of New Hampshire, one-time RNC chair, and George H. W. Bush’s former chief of staff, has broken with his Bush friends and made the endorsement of Trump.
He had been highly critical of Trump. However, the morning after the debate, the Trump campaign released this statement from Sununu:
“Donald Trump is the only candidate in this race who can bring bold change to Washington D.C. I support the Trump-Pence ticket for their pro-growth agenda and commitment to protecting American interests. Republicans, Independents and smart Democrats need to come together to elect Donald Trump and Mike Pence.”
How much weight the Sununu endorsement will have is another thing.
He has a mixed reputation within the party, particularly with conservative activists. They are slow to forget that it was Sununu who pushed Bush to make the deal for a tax increase in 1990 and go back on his “read my lips” pledge from two years earlier
On the other hand, that’s old news and Sununu’s status as an elder statesman far outweighs the negatives.
Getting Sununu on board is also more evidence that Team Trump is trying to bring in all wings of the GOP together, a welcome strategy that seems to be working well.
Whether or not Sununu’s decision to endorse Trump will have any influence over the Bushes remains to be seen, but his move does leave them more and more isolated from the vast majority of the Republican Party.
