Desperate Collusion!

cruz-trump-kasichSunday night saw the latest piece of scheming to deny the people their choice of republican nominee for the presidency.

Trump’s two remaining rivals, Ted Cruz and John Kasich, announced that they were going to coordinate their efforts to try to stop him from reaching the 1,237 delegates he needs to win the nomination.

As Donald Trump has rightly said this sort of underhand collusion is an act of desperation.

Neither Cruz nor Kasich has any chance of getting enough delegates required to clinch the nomination. Both men have been all but mathematically eliminated from reaching the 1,237 number before the convention. They know it. And they know the only remote chance they have is to force a contested convention.

Their announcement was clearly coordinated. Within minutes of each other, Cruz and Kasich issued statements late Sunday saying they will divide their efforts in upcoming contests with Cruz focusing on Indiana and Kasich devoting his efforts to Oregon and New Mexico.

The change of strategy, which the two campaigns have been working on for weeks, is aimed at blocking Trump from gaining the 1,237 delegates necessary to claim to GOP nomination this summer.

It is an unusual, some would even say extraordinary, move that reflects the national strength Trump has shown and the inability of Republicans who oppose him to come together to stop him.

Dividing up some of the remaining primary states by putting forward one strong alternative to Trump in each may take some delegates away from the front-runner, but will it be enough to stop him?

How certain are either Cruz or Kasich that it will be enough just to instruct people which candidate to vote for? All their names will still be on the ballot paper and you can be sure it will go against the grain of many voters, firstly not to go for their choice of candidate and secondly to vote for another candidate who they may not even like.

Trump is the only candidate who can realistically get a first-ballot victory. He is expected to do well tomorrow, when Republicans in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Connecticut and Rhode Island head to the polls.

The Cruz/Kasich collusion smells very much of too little too late. But it is also an indication that both men would rather see a contested convention that threatens to tear the Republican Party asunder, rather than accepting the will of the people.

donald-trump-rtuWe knew already that Cruz will lie, cheat, steal, misrepresent and just about everything else that is dirty and underhand, so no surprises there.

For Kasich, on the other hand, getting involved in this piece of collusion blows the lid off his attempts to portray himself as the great peacemaker and the one who would never involve himself in any in-fighting.

Maybe it will serve as a warning to both their supporters?

Meantime Trump summed it up nicely in a couple of recent Tweets:

‘Wow, just announced that Lyin’ Ted and Kasich are going to collude in order to keep me from getting the Republican nomination. DESPERATION!’

‘Lyin’ Ted and Kasich are mathematically dead and totally desperate. Their donors & special interest groups are not happy with them. Sad!’
